A common problem with off-road motorcycles is people's boots rubbing the paint off the frame, those panels are designed to prevent that from happening. Nice that they are included as many are bought after-market.
1. It's metal alloy 1 mm thick, covered with rubber. Crank shaft is sealed by rubber ring inside alloy. 2. No way it can be removed without carter separation. 3. Damage I have it's only cosmetical, damage to the rubber, alloy and seal is intact. 4. No need for exchange, faith in Honda has returned.
I seem to read a bit about owners of 2020/ 2021 models suffering through the different TFT problems that arise. Understandably you only ever really hear the problematic stories when things turn to poo, so it makes getting a general idea of the prevalence of issues such as TFT reliability difficult to gauge.

2018-2020 Honda Africa Twins have been recalled. According to ADVPulse, American Honda Motor Co. issued a recall on the Africa Twin Adventure Sports models for a fuel filter issue. 2,690 bikes are affected by the recall officially issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The first incarnation was built up around the Transalp 650 twin engine, this is commonly known as the RD03 which is a rare find these days. In 1989 the RD04 version was launched and joined the Honda UK line up as an officially imported model. The 750cc Africa Twin was initially a big hit and, other than the Yamaha XTz750 Super Tenere, there
mRaN. I rode a stock one with the 6 spd on asphalt only so I can't comment on the DCT or the offroading experience, sorry. They are not purposely withholding production. The plant producing the Africa Twin is in Kumamoto and was severely damaged in an earthquake earlier this year. The factory is just now coming back on line.
Problem #3: Lean Fueling. Most new bikes suffer from this. Rough idle, snatchy/abrupt low speed response and backfiring. Just rode my friends identical bike with slip-on and mapped PC5, night and day improvement. Better in every way, you might not know it is a problem until you ride a properly tuned bike. Not unique to the AT! Problem #4
Won't start, just clicks and yet battery* and fuses OK - fixed. I have 2017 manual with 10K miles that suddenly developed a problem. First indication was when there was a slight hesitation when starting the bike, like the battery was weak. Then, a day later the bike would not start - only a loud clicking noise from the starter solenoid.
Sorry to hear of your issues leaving you stranded. If there is more debris in the tank, Honda should be replacing the full fuel pump assembly this time, including fuel pump and injectors. I would definitely install a Guglatech filter sock as well and be sure to let the NHTSA know your post recall results with still having issues.
