Showjorah, who actually did read the history books, would've made an excellent narrator for the main series. If you can get over his weird pronounciations (Urine Greyjoy, Anus Frey, Thomas Evans, Alister Thorne, Bryeene of Tarth etc.) Roy Dotrice is pretty good. Guessing Tom O'Sevens.

It seems like some of the individual smaller books have been combined and I want to try to avoid buying several books that include the same stories in them. It seems like I would start with Fire and Blood, but then couldn't figure out all the books that include Dunk and Egg's stories.
The first 2.5 books are good, though you'll learn all about sigils and what color doublet everyone is wearing. You can stop after the Red Wedding because the rest is shit. The entire franchise has a giant marketing machine behind it now, especially on social media, so you can't really trust the hype.
The CGI is outdated in LOTR, but Game of Thones has the benefit of coming out a decade after the LOTR movies and does not utilize GGI as much as LOTR does. In fact, GoT doesn't even show a major battle until the end of Season 2. Also GoT seems to waste a lot of screentime on needless sex scenes. I'm aware that this exists in the books as well.
The Accursed Kings is GRRM's inspiration for Game of Thrones. The first two books are available on Amazon, and through the Kindle store, the rest are available for pre-order. I'm on Book 11 of The Wheel of Time series and I love it. It's not quite low fantasy like Game of Thrones, but I've been engrossed from the beginning.
VmUq. Additionally, there is a third viewing option available, a streamlined 'machete' order. While Game of Thrones is a series which benefits from the tight intertangling of its plotlines, with minor characters and seemingly throwaway subplots gradually gaining prominence as the series goes on, this abbreviated episode order lists the Game of
The house of dragons is based on some parts of fire and blood but that's much more of a sketch vs a complete story like with the game of thrones series. If you are going to read the books- read the a song of ice and fire series first - then either fire and blood or the dunk and egg books. Just as an edit- I wouldn’t assume you know enough
1.A Storm of Swords. Jon's conflict and inner struggle while traveling with the Wildlings. His story from start to finish is some of the best and most satisfying in the series, especially the ending of his election as Lord Commander. Catelyn and Robb's tragic ending.
The Game of Thrones RPG gave hard numbers for the troop strengths of the Great Houses. Those numbers are not canonical, but GRRM did look them over without finding anything about them that made him go "whoa that is completely wrong House X is much stronger/weaker than that" so I think they are pretty decent for a rough idea of comparisons.
